Under the Microscope: MALDIBANK expands the potential of microbial identification

MALDIBANK is expanding the potential of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for microbial identification and profiling. By bringing together a wider diversity of microorganisms, advanced AI-driven analysis and open-access FAIR data resources, the project aims to extend the technology beyond its traditional applications and support new uses across research, industry, agriculture, food and environmental fields. Coordinated by MIRRI-ERIC, MALDIBANK builds on the success of the MSI-2 platform and brings together leading research infrastructures, culture collections, IT and AI experts, and industry partners to develop an open, cloud-based MALDI-TOF MS spectra database. After its first year, the project has already delivered a demo platform, established standards for spectra and metadata, and launched a dedicated training programme.
