Italy has been a MIRRI-ERIC Member since 2025 and coordinates microbial research and biotechnological innovation through the MIRRI-Italy Node. The node is an infrastructure distributed throughout the Italian territory which focuses on fostering microbial diversity conservation, characterisation and distribution, microbiome research, and biotechnological transfer. It includes various microbial biobanks hosted in Universities and Public Research Centres providing access to microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, filamentous fungi, yeasts, and microalgae), metadata, know-how, expertise, cutting-edge facilities, and services for the development of innovative microbial-based solutions for Academia and Bioindustry. |
SERVICES PROVIDED
|
Collection, preservation, identification, characterisation, and systematic study of microbial strains, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and algae. Multi-omics approaches and cutting-edge facilities and platforms for new perspective on strain authentication, quality control, and accessibility of resources for academia and industry
Design and implementation of microbial processes in food, agriculture, pharmaceutical, and environmental sectors. Activities include microbial metabolite production, fermentation technologies, environmental microbiology, wastewater treatment, and, eventually, tailored biotechnological applications
Provision of professional training and education programs, including workshops and technical courses. Development of databases, pipelines, and tools to streamline microbial genomics, metagenomics and bioinformatics. Support for Open Science and cross-sectoral knowledge exchange
