Growth, Impact and Key Achievements: MIRRI-ERIC Presents the 2025 Annual Report

MIRRI-ERIC has published its 2025 Annual Report, highlighting a year marked by growth, strengthened capacity, and expanding impact across Europe and beyond.

A major milestone was Italy's accession as a Member State of MIRRI-ERIC, contributing new expertise and resources to the infrastructure. Together with new partners joining existing National Nodes, the network now comprises 46 partner organisations across eight European countries.

Throughout 2025, MIRRI-ERIC continued to support researchers, industry, and innovation by providing access to microbial resources, services, and expertise. Across the infrastructure, more than 13.300 biological material samples were distributed, over 5.000 access proposals were supported, and training activities reached more than 7.000 participants.

The year also saw important progress in strengthening MIRRI-ERIC's operational and scientific capacity. The Central Coordinating Unit expanded with new roles in operations, communication, and impact. At the same time, work advanced on quality management, socioeconomic impact assessment, and the development of the next Scientific Work Programme.

Building a Stronger and More Connected Infrastructure

2025 was also a year of increased collaboration and visibility. MIRRI-ERIC was featured in more than one hundred presentations at conferences, scientific meetings, and stakeholder events, while publications from MIRRI-ERIC partners grew by more than 50% compared with the previous year. These achievements reflect the growing recognition of the infrastructure and the expertise of its community.

At the same time, MIRRI-ERIC reinforced its role in the European research landscape through active participation in policy discussions, strategic initiatives, and international collaborations. Contributions to key European consultations and continued engagement with research infrastructure networks helped strengthen MIRRI-ERIC's position as a trusted voice for microbial resources and biotechnology.

MIRRI-ERIC further advanced its digital infrastructure through collaborative work on the MIRRI Information System, laying the foundations for improved data integration, interoperability, and user experience. These efforts support the long-term development of services that will make microbial resources and associated data more accessible and impactful for researchers and innovators.

Looking ahead

As preparations begin for its first scientific evaluation and the upcoming ESFRI assessment, MIRRI-ERIC enters 2026 with a stronger network, enhanced services, and a clear vision for the future.

The 2025 Annual Report reflects the collective efforts of the MIRRI-ERIC community and its continued commitment to enabling research and innovation through access to high-quality microbial resources, data, and expertise, contributing to a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future.
