GOVERNANCE |
|
MIRRI-ERIC is a distributed, yet centrally coordinated, pan-European Research Infrastructure. Its governance structure ensures effective decision-making and strategic oversight, comprising the following key bodies:
Serves as the principal decision-making body, composed of delegates from each Member country. It determines MIRRI-ERIC’s strategy, governance, and development as a research infrastructure. Each Member has one vote and decisions are typically made by a two-thirds majority.
Appointed by the AoM, the ED is the legal representative and Chief Executive Officer of MIRRI-ERIC. The ED leads and administers the infrastructure, implements AoM decisions, prepares annual reports and budgets, and appoints staff for the Central Coordinating Unit (CCU).
The CCU supports the ED in managing MIRRI-ERIC’s operations. It comprises two distributed sections: the Statutory Seat in Braga (Portugal) and the Collaborative Working Environment (CWE) Hub in Paterna (Spain). The CCU handles general management, financial administration, stakeholder communication, user access systems, and regulatory matters.
The NCF is composed of the ED and the National Coordinator of each Member, designated through a National Node. It is chaired by the ED and vice-chaired by up to two elected members. The NCF supports the ED, contributes to the annual Work Program and budget, and ensures interaction between MIRRI-ERIC and its Partners.
The AB is an independent body of experts appointed by the AoM to advise on scientific and strategic matters relevant to MIRRI-ERIC. It reflects the infrastructure’s diverse application areas, including ethics, science, legislation, and industrial applications. Together with the ED, the AB evaluates aspiring Partners according to the criteria set out in the Partner Charter.
The EB is an independent body established to advise the AoM on ethical matters pertinent to MIRRI-ERIC’s activities. Composed of independent experts, the EB ensures that ethical considerations are integrated into the infrastructure’s operations and policies. |

This governance framework ensures that MIRRI-ERIC operates transparently, efficiently, and in alignment with its mission to support research and innovation in microbiology and biotechnology. The Executive Director, together with the Advisory Board, is responsible for evaluating aspiring Partners according to the criteria specified on the Partner Charter. Below, you can find a diagram of the workflow between the aforementioned bodies and, after, the corresponding people that compose them:
